For over 50 years Sharp has been harnessing the power of the sun. As the global leaders in Solar Photovoltaic technology Sharp produce around 600 MW of solar PV every year with more than 220 MW being produced here in our Wrexham factory.
Renewable energy is a rapidly growing market and hot topic of discussion. As fossil fuels run out, energy prices soar and the threats associated with global warming becoming ever more apparent, the importance of the future of solar power cannot be underestimated.
As a result Sharp decided to open a Solar Centre to provide information, education and training to the wider community to make the UK a leader in the field of renewable solar power.
The Solar Centre provides:
Installer training for solar photovoltaic systems Information for architects, councils, builders and planners Education for schools/colleges/universities Facilities for business meetings/conferences in a state of the art settingZone 1: "The Sun"
Zone one provides information on the sun, explaining the importance of the sun and how without it there would be no life on planet earth.
Zone 2: “Solar Energy“
Zone two provides an insight into the history of energy. Explanations are provided as to what solar energy is and how sunlight is converted into energy. The environmental issues are explored and the pro's & con's and the potential future of solar is studied.
Zone 3: "The Solar Lab & Solar Energy Applications"
Zone three explores how solar power is used in every day life including calculators, ticket machines, street lights, road signs, satellites, lighthouses, domestic solar power installations etc.
Exploded diagrams of solar cells and solar panels explain the technical details. The interactive area with touch screens allows you to test your knowledge with quizzes and games. If you are up for the challenge you can even try building your own solar toy and test if it works.
Zone 4: "The Future of Solar", "New Solar Technology"
Zone four outlines future developments including thin film and nanotechnology. It also looks at the potential future benefits to the planet and how global issues could be helped by using solar power instead of fossil fuels.
Zone 5: "History of Sharp" , "Case Studies“
Zone five provides a history of Sharp and the history of our manufacturing plant in Wrexham. It will highlight some projects we are proud to have been involved with and gives an overview of our other product ranges.
A guided tour of the factory is also available.
Visitors will be able to experience the manufacturing and production techniques required to assemble a PV Solar Module panel. The guided tour along the glazed walkway, provides a fascinating experience of Solar production and manufacturing.
